Designing for the future of space Travel: A training experience as an experiment

Once in a while, we get a chance to create and work on some truly innovative briefs. One such brief was the exo project. It was done as an inhouse experiment to build an advanced and futuristic experience and an HMI for training space going travellers as space travel is picking up a large amount of successful people.

Ideation for Innovation

We began with the question of how would people know what to do in space. There has to be a training and onboarding for this. But how will people go through this from an onboarding perspective,
>
Through extensive dialogue with clients and end-users, we identified key pain points, including disparate parts, inefficient space utilisation, and outdated controls. Armed with insights, we delved into ideation, exploring diverse architectures and forms to craft a solution that not only mitigated existing issues but also introduced novel features and enhancements.

Throughout this process, we leveraged design thinking methodologies to foster creativity and innovation, brainstorming multiple concepts and evaluating their feasibility against user needs and market trends. Collaborative workshops with Adithya Scientific's team enabled us to refine our ideas further, ensuring alignment with the company's vision and objectives.

Crafting for Perfection

From refining the movement mechanism of the chemical bath tub to centralising cable management, each element was meticulously crafted to deliver a cohesive and intuitive user experience.
>
With our design concepts in hand, we set the prototyping phase in motion to bring our vision to life. Through rigorous testing and iteration, we fine-tuned every aspect of the rotary evaporator design, ensuring smooth functionality and optimal user interaction.

Prototyping allowed us to validate our design assumptions and identify areas for improvement iteratively. By incorporating user feedback and conducting real-world simulations, we iteratively refined the design to address any remaining issues and optimize performance. This iterative approach ensured that the final product met the highest standards of quality and usability, setting the stage for its successful implementation in laboratory environments.

Where Ease Meets Innovation

Ergonomically positioned controls and a simplified digital display streamline operation, while corrosion-resistant materials withstand the rigors of chemical exposure.
>
Engineered with user comfort and convenience in mind, the redesigned rotary evaporator ensures a stellar user experience from start to finish. Intuitive touch interfaces empower users to navigate effortlessly, making routine tasks a breeze and enhancing productivity in the lab. The thoughtful design extends beyond aesthetics to prioritize user safety and efficiency. With features such as automatic shut-off mechanisms and intuitive error prompts, the rotary evaporator minimizes the risk of accidents and ensures smooth operation even for novice users. By putting user needs at the forefront of our design process, we've created a product that not only meets expectations but exceeds them, delivering unparalleled performance and reliability in laboratory environments.

User Interface for the Modern Lab

Taking a departure from the numerous buttons, knobs and toggles in the existing rotary evaporators, we created a completely new user interface for today’s user working in a modern lab. This interface design elevated Aditya Scientific’s standing and reputation among its users.
>
Instead of creating several tens of buttons, toggles, switches and knobs for each individual function, we created a sleek new interface that was completely digital and touch enabled. All the controls were done through a modern tablet with LED display, integrated to the rest of the rotary evaporator through a data transfer cable neatly tucked away. We kept in mind existing user behavior around controls - twisting knobs, flicking switches, etc. and mimicked those same actions on our User Interface for maximum usability. This ensured users needn’t go through a long steep learning curve to use the newly designed rotary evaporator, instead they intuitively knew what to do and how it works right from the first glance.
